Exceptionally useful advice
JENNY HULME, Journalist and author
What makes great writing? I think it's having something to say, then saying it well. The former can't be taught, but the latter can.
If you're at the stage where you
want to turn good writing into
terrific writing, I can help.
Mentoring is available by email. I will give you feedback on either work in progress, extracts or full manuscripts. This takes the form of a detailed edit and an overview critique. Send me up to 4,000 words for £95. It's also possible to send as many further batches of up to 4,000 words as you need, for the same price.
I can help you with fiction, poetry and journalism. For poetry, send a pamphlet-length collection (up to 16 poems) for an overview or 6-8 poems for a substantial, detailed critique.
I also run workshops for adults in these three fields. To book me for your event please use the box below for a quote.
If you're based in or near Cardiff, mentoring is available face-to-face if you prefer. Contact me in the box for details.
'Mark proved to be the most wonderful co-pilot as I wrote 60,000 words for 12 chapters of a book. Unlike an editor or sub who might be tempted to just rewrite a passage that wasn’t working, or redirect the copy by urging a rethink on style or message, Mark took time to completely understand my aims and style and material – and then offered thought-through and exceptionally useful advice on how I use those words and that style to best effect.
'It can be hard to write long features or books in isolation, but you don’t always want a second writer intruding on the journey. As a mentor by email Mark was never intrusive but instead gave me real confidence in the work I was doing. He helped make the writing of my first book a positive and pleasurable experience.'

Email me a sample of up to 4,000 words that you wish you work on, and receive a critique, a detailed edit and advice for what to do next. The feedback will be constructively critical; it's designed to help, not simply endorse. You can have as many sessions as you wish. Contact me in the box with further questions or special requests.
